The U18 Academy Girls competed in the semi-finals and finals of the Ontario Cup the weekend of July 21st and 22nd at Vaughan’s Zanchin Autmotive Soccer Centre. The team faced Barrie in the semi-final on Saturday, July 21st, coming away with a 8-0 victory to send them into the finals on Sunday!
Sunday proved to be a tougher test as the team faced off against Richmond Hill for the championship. Kitchener got off to a quick start, registering their first shot on goal only 4 minutes into the game when Alyssa Schmidt forced the Richmond Hill keeper to make a crucial save. Richmond Hill looked to take control of the game and scored in the 10th minute when Elisa Baglione found the back of the net. The lead was short-lived as Kitchener’s Genevieve Morgan showcased her dribbling prowess, weaving through multiple defenders to score the equalizer in the 11th minute. In the 46th minute Richmond Hill would strike again. After a collision with Kitchener’s goalkeeper, Richmond Hill capitalized on the chaos to tap the ball in, giving them a 2-1 lead which they wouldn’t relinquish despite Kitchener’s relentless fight to even the score.
